ENVIRONMENT

GIADEC is committed to protecting vegetation, water bodies and wildlife in any forest reserve where mining will be undertaken. There are global examples of industry best practice where forest reserves have been mined and successfully rehabilitated and GIADEC will draw upon these examples to ensure minimal impact to the environment and local communities.

In line with this, a biodiversity and hydrology baseline study, commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been carried out in the Atewa Forest. The purpose of the biodiversity and hydrology baseline study is to assess the current state of the forest and develop a Biodiversity Action Plan. The action plan will put in place interventions that will mitigate any potential environmental impact of future use of the Forest. Similar studies will be conducted in our other mining areas.

GIADEC will also adopt ethical conservation practices through responsible mining. In this regard, an Environmental Working Group drawn from Six (6) major Government agencies and departments has been established to advise GIADEC on environmental compliance issues. The agencies and departments are the Forestry Commission, Water Resources Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Minerals Commission, Ghana Geological Survey Authority, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
