EXISTING OPERATIONS

Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd. (GBC)
The Awaso bauxite mine has been in operation for over 80 years and is managed by Ghana Bauxite Company which is jointly owned by a Ghanaian Consortium, Ofori Poku Company Limited (OPCL) and Government of Ghana. The Government of Ghana’s interest in Ghana Bauxite Company is held by GIADEC. The mine currently produces approximately One million tonnes of bauxite a year. The bauxite grade at the Awaso mine is among the world’s best deposits of high alumina and low silica bauxite ore. Bauxite from Awaso is currently transported to Takoradi port by road for onward export. GIADEC is working with the Government of Ghana and its new partner, OPCL, to stabilise the existing operations at Awaso. GBC has renewed its mining lease effective January, 2022 and is currently mining Subri Hill in their Awaso Concession. The new outlook for GBC is to ramp up production from 1million tonnes per annum to 2 million per annum.

Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO)
VALCO was established as a result of the vision of the first President of the First Republic of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to establish an integrated aluminium industry in the country. Commercial Production of Aluminium began in 1967. In 2004, the Government of Ghana took full ownership of VALCO. Currently, the Government of Ghana’s interest in VALCO is held by GIADEC. With there being no bauxite refinery in Ghana, alumina (refined bauxite) is imported into Ghana to feed VALCO’s smelter. This is used in the smelter to produce aluminium for the domestic and international markets.
