FAQs

GIADEC was established in 2018 by the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation Act, 2018 (Act 976). The purpose is to promote and develop an Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) in Ghana.

To be the leading Integrated Aluminium Company in Africa, creating sustainable value for our stakeholders and differentiated by cost efficient, safe and environmentally sound operations.

GIADEC currently has one subsidiary, that is the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO). VALCO is now a wholly owned subsidiary of GIADEC aGer GoG transferred 100% of its equity shares previously held to GIADEC.

Yes. GIADEC holds 20% equity shares in Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC), which were previously held by the Government of Ghana.

Ghana’s vertically integrated aluminium industry seeks to take advantage of the country’s bauxite deposit by adding value at every stage of production from bauxite mining through to finished aluminium It involves the following stages:

  • Mining – extraction of raw bauxite
  • Refining – refining of bauxite into alumina
  • Smelting – smelting of alumina to produce aluminium
  • Downstream –manufacturing of end-products made from aluminium
  • Allied services – other industries needed to produce inputs to various stages of the aluminium value chain

GIADEC has developed a master plan that describes the components of the IAI as well as the enabling infrastructure, environmental and community considerations that will support it. The master plan sets out plans for the operation of four bauxite mines, two refineries and smelting activity in the country. It also describes the underlying infrastructure that is necessary to support the IAI, such as rail, port and power infrastructure.

Four projects have immediate focus and these are:

  • Project 1 – Expansion of existing Awaso mine and development of a refinery.
  • Project 2 – Development of a mine at Nyinahin-Mpasaaso and a refinery
  • Project 3 – Development of a mine at Kyebi, a second mine at Nyinahin-Mpasaaso and building of a refinery.
  • Project 4 – Modernisation and expansion of the Valco

GIADEC is also working with the Ministry of Trade to develop a framework to manage the aluminium downstream sector and a local content policy for the aluminium value-chain in general.

Kyebi in the Eastern Region, Awaso in the Western North Region, Nyinahin and Mpasaaso in the Ashanti Region.

GIADEC is commited to the use of modern technology in mining bauxite that will ensure minimal impact to the environment and local communities. Sustainability practices to guide mining include:

  • Restriction of any mining activities near water bodies
  • State of the art equipment and technology to reduce noise and dust
  • Preservation of topsoil to preserve flora and fauna for later reforestation.

Yes. GIADEC has created systems in each of the mining communities to allow effective engagement of the communities. These include:

i) The establishment of a community led 19-member committee represented by key groups within the communities including district assemblies, the clergy, and traditional rulers;

ii) Dialogue with traditional leaders within these communities on GIADEC’s plans

iii) Organised district forums and community durbars to reinforce key messages and plans and provide feedback for addressing community concerns;

iv) Recruitment of local Liaison Officers to engage and represent both GIADEC and community

GIADEC has established three Working Groups to engage directly with several other governmental organisations to deliver the IAI master plan. The Working Groups are for Power, Transport and Environment. A fourth working group for Industrialisation is being established to support the delivery of downstream component of the masterplan.

Working Group

Members

Power

Ghana Grid Company, Volta River Authority, Ghana Natural Gas Company, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, West African Pipeline Company, Volta Aluminium Company.

Transport

Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ghana Railway Development Authority, Volta Aluminium Company, Ministry of Railway Development.

Environment

Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana Geological Survey Authority, Forestry Commission, Water Resources Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Minerals Commission.

One of GIADEC’s priorities is to be ethical with forest and water conservation through responsible operations. An Environmental Working Group drawn from six (6) major Government agencies and departments has been established. The Environmental Working group meets regularly to discuss environmental issues that impact or are impacted by the proposed development of the Integrated Aluminium Industry. The agencies and departments are the Forestry Commission, Water Resources Commission, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Minerals Commission, Ghana Geological Survey Authority, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The benefits of the Integrated aluminium industry project in Ghana will include:

  1. Job creation
  2. Infrastructure development
  3. Value addition to raw materials
  4. Contribution to Ghana’s Industrialization agenda through the development of refineries, a smelter and manufacturing companies
  5. Development of local expertise
  6. A thriving downstream aluminium industry where aluminium products are produced locally
